Why it matters
Why aesthetics practitioners need anaphylaxis training
Anaphylaxis is rare, but when it happens you have minutes, not hours. Anyone injecting, or using products that can trigger an allergic reaction, needs to recognise the signs early and act without hesitating. That is why the awarding body makes a current basic life support qualification part of the entry requirements from Level 5 upwards.
What you learn
- Assessing an emergency safely
- CPR and using an automated external defibrillator (AED) on someone who is not breathing normally
- The recovery position for someone unresponsive but breathing normally
- Managing anaphylaxis, including using an adrenaline auto-injector
Questions
Basic life support for aesthetics FAQs
Is this basic life support course accepted for Level 5, 6 and 7?
Yes. The awarding body’s Level 5, 6 and 7 aesthetic practice specifications all list the Level 3 Award in Adult Basic Life Support, AED and Management of Anaphylaxis as an accepted entry qualification.
How long is the certificate valid?
Three years from the date of certification. Most regulated aesthetics diplomas ask for a currently valid certificate when you register, so keep an eye on the date.
How long is the course?
The qualification is 4 hours of total qualification time, including 3 guided learning hours, delivered face to face.
How is it assessed?
You complete the awarding body’s candidate workbook, which needs a 100% pass mark, and your assessor observes four practical skills, including CPR with an AED and managing anaphylaxis, supported by photo or video evidence.
What is the minimum age?
The current specification (February 2026) says candidates must be at least 16 on the day they register.
Can I do it online?
No. The awarding body requires this award to be delivered face to face, because CPR, AED use and the recovery position have to be practised and observed.
